Juliet Rickard | Founding Director & TrusteeJuliet grew up in Leicestershire and is the daughter of a professional drummer. After studying at the Royal Northern College of Music and Royal Academy of Music, she completed formal teacher-training, then taught oboe and general woodwind in London.
She has held senior management posts in Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Norfolk including Assistant Head of Norfolk Music Service and Director of the Norfolk County Youth Orchestra (2009-2022). She has run large European projects such as ‘Triorca’ as well as successful community projects, including Thetford Music Project. Other roles have included Chair of School Governors, Head of Woodwind and Workshop Coordinator. As a highly-experienced music educator and leader Juliet has spent four decades teaching, leading large teams, running orchestras and ensembles, workshops, staff training and public performances, throughout this country and abroad. |
In 2013 she was appointed Head of Centre at Guildhall Young Artists Norwich (GYAN), a pioneering under-18 conservatoire for talented young musicians. GYAN now has over 160 students attending on Saturday’s aged between 4 and 19 who follow a progressive music training programme; many continue their studies in high-ranking UK conservatoires and universities. The model has been followed in other Centres nationally. In recognition of this work Juliet and her GYAN team received a Pearson National Teaching Silver Award, in 2020.
Juliet is founder Director of ‘Triorca’, a European youth orchestra bringing together outstanding musicians from Britain, Germany, and Serbia under the baton of Artistic Director, Nicholas Daniel OBE. This initiative has been successful in all three countries, receiving significant European support. Triorca has performed in such venues as Saffron Hall, Snape Maltings, the Gorreshaus in Koblenz, and the Synagogue in Novi Sad. In 2018 she was nominated for an ‘OSCAR’ by Norfolk County Council for this work.
Her life’s work has been to invite inspiring performers to become a part of the local musical landscape, especially in the East of England: and then carefully to nurture the creativity and confidence which follows. In 2019 she was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
